The Cartoon Museum Basel is the only museum and centre of excellence in Switzerland devoted exclusively to the art of narrative drawing.

In 2014 the museum challenged the Basel School of Design (SFG) to redesign its existing website into a new responsive site, as well as to create a short 10 seconds Intro-movie based on a concept that the students would be free to choose. Since cartoon derives its inspiration from the real world, it’s not too far off to imagine the real world coming together with the adventures and figures of a comic book. This being said, I chose to name my concept „Cartoon ist überall“ or „Cartoon is everywhere“. Meaning, that with enough imagination, you can go out and start to see adventures happen in the real world and translate them back into a new or existing comic story.

Mobile-first.

The website was designed to combine the visual and material aesthetics of a comic book as well as the corporate colors of the Cartoon Museum and combine them with the modern and responsive functionality of a responsive website. Therefor, a simple layout was created based on the looks of speech bubbles. These can expand and collapse based on the content, and give you the sense of looking at an actual sheet of paper. Since most of the website visits already came from mobile devices, the site was built up with a mobile-first design, therefore allowing visitors to browse the site more comfortably trough their smartphones.

Cartoon heroes
can be anywhere.

Sometimes, reality and cartoon don’t seem too far from each other. If we look more closely, we can find most of our favorite comic heroes walking around amongst us. Creativity is about drawing connections between many different inputs, if you look at these inputs from a cartoon perspective, you’ll see that Cartoon truly is everywhere.
