The JKF is a three day long Music festival happening in late summer in the city of Basel. In 2015 the festival challenged the Basel School of Design to create a new concept of the festival, including a logo, poster and website.

Since the JKF festival is made out of many different artists, acting on multiple stages in different parts of the city, it works as a united network of artists, activities and stages, that come together to form one Festival. Therefor my concept was all about „connections“. Considering that the JKF embraces young people, the new design should be a reflection of the 21th century youth, inspired by technology and connected by the internet. This required the design of a very flexible and scalable system that could adapt to different mediums and work across multiple platforms.

Making posters
interactive

Since nothing stands still at the JKF festival, neither would the poster. Therefor, the new JKF poster was designed to move and interact with its observers. Despite also being able to be printed as a still image, it was clearly designed for digital billboards. The logo in the center is made out of an "F" and "J" that move together to form the new JKF logo.

The letters divide the poster into different geometric shapes that can break out and move into different directions and form new spaces to fill with new content. Despite of their movement, the JKF letters still connect all the other elements of the poster, just like the different platforms and artists of the festival are connected to each other to form the festival. Additional, vibrant colors and complimentary-contrasts represent the power and rebellious energy of the youth.

JKF Gallery.
Marrying a festival
with social media.

The JKF website site was built up with a mobile-first design, therefore allowing visitors to browse the site more comfortably trough their smartphones. Since the JKF generates a lot of images and videos that people want to share on social media, the JKF’s Gallery was built to smoothly integrate with social media platforms like Facebook. Allowing pictures to be commented and shared directly through social media while appearing on the JKF platform as well.

Line-up and stages.
Always up to date.

During the festival, different stages are simultaneously being used by many artists. Therefore, it’s important to constantly be able to browse the festival line-up from a smartphone while walking around in the city. Updates and past events will be updated in real time to notify the visitors if a show has been cancelled or missed.
